'Safe and Sound’ the Theme for Owners DayHave you ever wondered what is special about Sligo’s built heritage or wanted to know how protected structures are considered through the planning system? Perhaps you would like to hear about the practical aspects of caring for heritage buildings and what types of practical supports are available in terms of conservation advice, sourcing contractors or funding for those carrying out conservation works. If these questions are of interest, then ‘Safe & Sound’, an upcoming information day for owners of heritage buildings is for you. The information seminar is funded by Sligo Local Authorities in partnership with The Heritage Council and is a collaboration between the Heritage Office, Planning Section and Architects Department of Sligo Local Authorities. The first ‘Owners Day’ during 2007 was an outstanding success, with over 140 delegates attending. Such was the demand for places at the seminar that unfortunately not everyone could be accommodated. It was also expressed by many of the delegates attending that they would like to have a follow on information day with more practical information being provided on how to maintain and conserve heritage buildings. This years information seminar for owners of heritage buildings - ‘Safe and Sound’ aims to do just that! The purpose of the seminar is to provide participants with the knowledge of the main provisions of the legislation, policies and procedures relating to built heritage; to provide useful help and advice to those caring for heritage buildings; promote best practice in the care of the historic built environment and raise awareness of Sligo’s built heritage resource. The seminar will be of interest to owners of historic buildings and protected structures; planning agents, developers, estate agents, local authority staff, elected members, community groups and interested individuals. A full and varied programme has been compiled and will include an introduction to the work of the NIAH by Willy Cumming, Senior Architect with the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH), DEHLG. Advice on conserving your home – a case study approach will be given by Gráinne Shaffrey of Shaffrey Associates Architects. Information on sources of funding and advice will be given by Siobhán Ryan, Heritage Officer, with Sligo County Council. Stone and lime mortar will be covered by Pat McAfee, Master Stonemason with FAS, while Jacqui Donnelly, Conservation Architect with the Architectural Heritage Advisory Unit, DEHLG will provide advice on how to give your building a health check, and how to care for roofs, windows and doors. Colm Murray, Architecture Officer with The Heritage Council will discuss traditional buildings on Irish farms, while John Dorman, Dorman Architects and Gerry Healy, Kevinsfort Ltd, will discuss ‘Conserving heritage buildings, a practitioner’s view’ and ‘Built heritage - a developer’s/owner’s perspective’ respectively. Siobhán Ryan, Heritage Officer with Sligo County Council said that ‘Sligo’s built heritage makes a strong contribution to the cultural identity of our county, be it through our public buildings, streetscapes, street furniture, country house, bridges and vernacular buildings, many of which are in the care of individuals, families and local communities and indeed public authorities’. She went on to say, ‘we have had such a huge change in the management of heritage buildings throughout Ireland through the listing of protected structures, that there is an ongoing need for information regarding conservation, planning and best practice’. Siobhán Ryan stressed that, ‘we hope that the seminar will also provide an opportunity for owners and custodians of heritage buildings to meet and exchange views, so we would encourage everyone interested to attend, our hope is to build on the success of last year and to provide new and additional information to owners to assist them in the challenge of caring for heritage buildings’. The seminar will take place on Friday, 25th April 2008 in the Sligo Park Hotel, Sligo from 9.00am -15.30pm. Places are strictly limited and attendance must be booked in advance by returning a completed booking form.
