Welcome to Sligo Heritage Office

Established in 1999 by Sligo County Council, the County Sligo Heritage Office is committed to providing high quality advice on all matters relating to heritage. Central to the work of the Heritage Office is the promotion of interest, knowledge and pride in the heritage of County Sligo, and in so doing, increasing awareness, appreciation and enjoyment of the County’s heritage for all.  This is achieved through:

  • Continued support for the County Sligo Heritage Forum
  • Collecting information
  • Promoting best practice in heritage conservation and management
  • Raising awareness and education
  • Promoting partnership and participation
  • Supporting integration and inclusion of heritage policy across all sectors
Under the Heritage Act (1995), heritage is defined as including the following 13 areas:

  2. Archaeological objects
  3. Heritage objects
  4. Architectural heritage
  5. Flora
  6. Fauna
  7. Wildlife Habitats
  8. Landscapes
  9. Seascapes
  10. Wrecks
  11. Geology
  12. Heritage gardens and parks

The Heritage Council part funds the network of 28 City/County Heritage Officers in Local Authorities across the country. The Heritage Council’s vision is that the value of our heritage is enjoyed, managed and protected for the vital contribution that it makes to our identity, well-being and future.
