River and Lake Water Quality

County Sligo is fortunate in enjoying a very high quality environment. The EPA report on Water Quality in Ireland, 1998-2000, shows that County Sligo has one of the highest proportions of unpolluted river channel in the Country.

Of rivers surveyed:

  • 92% Unpolluted
  • 4% Slightly Polluted
  • 4% Moderately Polluted
  • 0% Seriously Polluted

The overall quality of lakes in the County remains high, with most lakes classified as satisfactory, i.e. oligo or mesotrophic. However, the treat of eutrophication (nutrient enrichment) is ever present, and it’s prevention and control, is identified as an environmental priority by Sligo County Council. The EPA published a further updated report Water Quality in Ireland, 2000-2003 in June 2005. An interpretation of its finding will be posted in due course.
