Hazardous Waste

What is hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste should not be disposed of in household waste.  This is usually because it has some of the following properties - corrosive, toxic, harmful, explosive, irritant or flammable.

There are many different types of hazardous wastes, for example:

  • Cleaning agents
  • Bleaches
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Oil
  • Asbestos
  • Old Farm medicines
  • Antifreeze Batteries
  • Waste medicines
  • Herbicides
  • Pesticides
  • Adhesives
  • Paints
  • Paint stripper
  • Paint thinners
  • Fridges
  • Freezers
  • Electrical goods
  • Glues
  • Inks
  • Sealants

Where can I safely dispose of hazardous waste?

Many of these items can be recycled at our civic amenity sites for a small charge or for free if they are electrical goods.  The County Council does annual pick up of hazardous waste for items such as old paint cans.   For other items, such as asbestos, you can contact permitted hazardous waste collectors directly.

Where can I find details of permitted hazardous waste collectors?

Go to the www.connaughwaste.ie website and go to permits.  Search in this section eg. If you want a collector of asbestos waste – enter asbestos in search box.

Hazardous Electrical Waste

These are now recycled for free at civic amenity sites or when you purchase new similar electrical equipment from shops.

Asbestos

There is much uncertainty surrounding the handling and disposal of asbestos. The most common form of asbestos queries usually refer to the flat or corrugated cement bound sheets. However the attached link identifies typical asbestos products and where they are likely to be found. www.enfo.ie/leaflets/bs29.htm

When considering the movement, handling and disposal of such material it is vital to consult the following technical advice.

Hazardous Waste Transportation

Businesses producing hazardous waste

If your company or business is producing hazardous waste you are responsible for making sure that it is disposed of in a proper environmental manner. You must comply with the Waste Management (Movement of Hazardous Waste) Regulations 1998. This requires that any movement of hazardous waste must always be accompanied by a Consignment Note (C1 Form). Failure to do so could result in a prosecution.   These forms are available from your Local Authority.

Transfrontier Shipment Documentation is required for the movement of hazardous waste into other states. Consult with the Local Authority on such movements.

HAZARDOUS WASTE PICK UPS

Sligo County Council’s environment section organises pick-ups annually for hazardous wastes – waste that should not be placed into your general rubbish and currently not able to be deposited at our civic amenity sites.  For example:

  • Paint
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Aerosols
  • Old medicines, including veterinary/farm medicines
