Anti PovertyThe Combat Poverty Agency (CPA) in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Local Government has established a “Local Government Anti-Poverty Learning Network”. The aim of the Network is to promote and support the development of a strong anti-poverty focus within a reformed system of Local Government. It seeks to provide a forum in which Local Authorities can share experiences and consider how to make a maximum contribution to policies to tackle poverty and social exclusion. Sligo County Council is a member of the “Local Government Anti-Poverty Learning Network”. In 2002/2003 the following workshops were held for staff of the Local Authority to consider and adopt “practical ways” in which the Local Authority can combat social exclusion and poverty within County Sligo in the delivery of services. Workshop - 18th November, 2002 “Anti-Poverty Training”The workshop was one of a series being delivered in a number of Local Authorities on behalf of the Combat Poverty Agency. Its aim was to help the County Council develop a focus on how it might best take anti-poverty forward. Workshop 31st March, 2003 “Enhancing Local Authority Service Provision for People with Disabilities”On the 31st March 2003 a half-day workshop was held in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo to look at “What local authorities can do in practical ways to improve their service delivery towards people with disabilities”. A cross section of staff from both Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council attended this workshop. Cearbhall O’Meadhra and Michal Ozmin from the Institute of Design and Disability outlined local authority obligations under the Barcelona Declaration, the aim of which is to encourage local government to make provision for the inclusion of people with disabilities in the community, which it represents. The Barcelona Declaration Project 2002 - 2004is designed to facilitate local authorities in creating a more inclusive society and is being delivered by the Institute for Design and Disability on behalf of the National Disability Authority. Essentially the Barcelona Declaration is a Gateway to facilitate local authorities to tackle one of the grounds of the Equality Agenda namely Disability Workshop - 20th October, 2003 “Community Involvement Workshop”The workshop was focussed on the overall objective - to develop approaches to the involvement of communities in council work. Dorothy Clarke, Director of Services opened the workshop, emphasising the crucial role of staff in the delivery of services and in driving new approaches forward. The purpose of the workshop was to look at the involvement of communities on local authority decision making. The workshop consisted of inputs / presentations on consultation and participation covering different aspects of theory, methods and best practice. This workshop was attended by 23 staff members working in various sections and departments in the County Council, as well as some staff from the Borough Council.
