Rapid Projects

A total of 19 projects were developed with the specific aim of meeting the identified needs, these projects have been implemented over the past year. The total amount of new investment in RAPID areas over the past year arising from these projects is just over €1.5 m. The following are examples of projects prioritised under the RAPID Programme in 2003.

Childcare

Childcare facilities in RAPID areas are one of the priorities identified locally. In 2003 four childcare facilities in RAPID areas received a total of €791,036 in funding from the Dept of Justice Equality & Law Reform in the form of staffing and capital funding. This funding will ensure the provision of quality affordable and accessible childcare facilities for families living in RAPID areas. The facilities include Cranmore/Abbeyquarter Centre, Lifestart Sligo & Family Services, MCR Mail Coach Road and Sligo Springboard Project.

Estate Management Initiative:

A joint estate management initiative was undertaken between Sligo Borough Council and the community of the East Ward funded by Combat Poverty Agency and Sligo Borough Council. The objective of the programme was to develop and implement a Charter for Estate Management, tenant participation and delivery of services between Sligo Borough Council and the Community of the East Ward.

Merville Community Centre

The Merville Community Centre received €40,000 from PEACE 11 Sligo County Council Task Force to replace the existing asbestos roof which posed a potential health risk to users of the facility in particular the local childcare facility.

Forthill Municipal Park – Active Recreational Facilities

€250,000 has been made available to Sligo Borough Council from the Dept of Arts Sports & Culture to develop a mix of active and passive recreational facilities including new soccer pitches and multi purpose play areas in the Forthill area North Ward.

CHOICE Programme:

CHOICE is a person centered, needs led, approach to the delivery of support/care for older people to enable them to reside for as long as is possible within their own community. The North Western Health Board is piloting this project in the East Ward.

WAVES:

Women Against Violence Programme – the development of an information, support and advocacy service for women experiencing violence in relationships is being supported by the North Western Health Board to recruit a programme manager and premises, funding €115,000.

Traveller Women’s Project:

Funding of €81,089 provided to deliver a programme of training to Traveller Women in association with Sligo LEADER Partnership Company, Dept of Education and VEC. Sligo Leader Partnership Company, Dept of Education & Science and VEC are currently involved in negotiations to secure a suitable site to build a Travellers Training Centre.

Cranmore Regeneration

Funding of €65,000 has been secured to initiate the development of an urban regeneration plan for the Cranmore area including an associated implementation plan with a key focus on Housing, Environment, Recreation, Enterprise, Childcare, Education and Training and Community Development. Lead agency Sligo Borough Council.

Youth:

Programme of sport activities developed for teenage girls and young people from the North Ward with a particular focus on children attending St Edwards N.S. and Ballinode College. This is an integrated project involving Sligo Education Centre, Dept of Education and Science, Sligo Sports and Recreation Partnership, VEC, Dept Social & Family Affairs, Sligo LEADER Partnership Company. Application submitted to the Dept of Education & Science to develop a new Youth reach Centre in Sligo town – lead Agency VEC.

Long Term Unemployed RAPID Areas

The Dept of Social & Family Affairs have developed a programme titled STEP 1 specifically targeting the long term unemployed in RAPID areas and their reintegration into the workforce.

Dormant Accounts Funding

A number of applications were submitted under the RAPID Programme to the Dormant Accounts Board.
