€1.4 Million Treatment Plant for Gurteen
Sligo County Council is to construct a new wastewater treatment plant at Rathmadder, Gurteen which will cater for a population equivalent of 2,500. The new plant will be developed on the site of the existing wastewater treatment plant and will serve existing waste water producers and will also accommodate future development in Gurteen, both domestic and nondomestic.

The new plant will cater for loading which is over and above the current capacity of the works. Its provision will facilitate future development within Gurteen and provide environmental enhancement to the receiving waters in the Gurteen River.  The project is to be funded from the Development Contributions Fund in the first instance and then recover this investment by the application of a Special Development Contributions Scheme over a 10-year period.

Following the planning and public procurement processes, and a full analysis of the submissions received, it was established that the Most Economically Advantageous Tender (MEAT) was the tender submitted by Response Engineering Ltd from Co.Cork Work on this project is due to start in July. It is expected that the construction of the plant will take approximately 6 months.

NRA Approval for N17 Scheme
In the past three years there have been major increases in funding from both the National Roads Association and Department of Environment Heritage & Local Government for design and construction of national and non-national roads in the county. The Road Design Unit, with a staff of ten engineers, five technicians and three administrative staff now carry out all design work for major and minor road schemes and bridges in the county, and provide support for design of schemes within the Borough.

National Road Design
Route selection has been carried out and a preferred route has been identified for all National Primary routes in the county, including the N4 (Dublin Road), the N15 (Donegal Road), the N16 (Manorhamilton Road) and the N17 (Galway Road).

In relation to the N17 Tobercurry Bypass the Preliminary Design, Environmental Impact Statement and Compulsory Purchase Order documentation have been completed and was forwarded to the NRA in April this year and approval and authorisation to proceed to publication is now awaited. This road has been designed as a ‘Type 2 Dual Carriageway’, with two lanes in each direction and a wire rope barrier in between.

Work is continuing in relation to preliminary design and environmental studies on two other sections of the N17, namely Collooney to Achonry and Rathscanlon to Curry.  Ground Investigation on these sections of the N17 will be carried out this year.
