Tourism Projects
Bord Failte’s Report on Tourism Infrastructure Funding identified the Strandhill Visitor Management Project as capable of meeting their criteria for funding: ‘The project submitted will undertake resurfacing works at the public car park located on Lower Buenos Ayres Drive, introduce soft landscaping, attractive street lighting thereby increasing the overall attractiveness, appeal and usage of this ample and currently under-utilized parking facility. Strandhill has great tourism potential with a wide variety of activities on offer to visitors including surfing, golf, rugby, equestrian activities and cultural/walking, and this project is aimed at increasing length of stay and ensuring return visits for tourists to this popular seaside location. The estimated cost of this project is €219,000.
Road Design Updates
A route for the N4/N15 Sligo to County Boundary was adopted by Sligo County and Borough Councils in 2006 and the National Roads Authority have now provided funding for the appointment of Consulting Engineers. This will allow the Council to advance the design through Preliminary Design, Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) stage. Procurement of Consulting Engineers is underway at present. In 2006 funding was provided by the NRA for preparation of a Feasibility Study for a Sligo Western Bypass and this study will be completed in the current year.
Major Housing Scheme for Strandhill
A Voluntary Housing Scheme is being developed in Strandhill in conjunction with Respond Housing Association. The 44 unit scheme is expected to progress to Part 8 planning stage shortly.
Mid-Summer Book Sale
Sligo Library Service hosted a mid-summer book sale on Thursday 21st June at its Stephen Street Branch. The event proved very popular with many people picking up bargains from a choice of hundreds of titles from fact to fiction to fantasy.
