Tourism Infrastructure Funding

In a report considered at a recent meeting of Sligo County Council, Fáilte Ireland identified a number of projects for consideration for funding in the current year. Two of the projects in the report were located in the Sligo/Drumcliffe Area:

Sligo County Council - Rosses Point Promenade Enhancement Project (Phase 1) (National Coastal Walk)
The project submitted is Phase 1 of a two phase development in Rosses Point. Phase 1 to commence in 2007 will seek to improve walker’s safety and comfort at the hugely popular and well utilised local promenade.  Phase 2 will link to the works undertaken in Phase 1 and will encourage walking enthusiasts to continue from the promenade via a pedestrian link to a scenic walkway along the coast. This will cater for the needs of the prospective tourist walker offering a variety of landscape, with quality scenery and good viewing points, is easily accessible and sustainable for many years to come. The estimated cost of Phase 1 is €113,280.

Sligo County Council Drumcliffe Visitor Management Project (Phase 1) (Environmental Management)
The Tourism infrastructure is under considerable pressure and it is vital for the economic and environmental success of Drumcliffe as a tourism destination that there is a more co-ordinated approach to tourist related infrastructure development. The project submitted which is divided into two phases will in Phase 1 prepare the area for the onset of increased visitor numbers by improving parking facilities and implementing traffic control measures in the area. Phase 2 will develop a series of historical and heritage walks through the area in a more ambitious plan. The estimated cost of Phase 1 is €255,840.

Grange Housing Scheme

Sligo County Council’s new four unit housing scheme at Grange is well advanced, and a successful bidder has been appointed for the 10 unit Affordable Housing scheme in Carney.

Major Road Improvement Works

Over €1m was allocated to the laying of a new quality overlay and road widening works on the N15 south of Cashelgarren. A new pedestrian crossing was provided in Grange under the National Primary Accident/Remedial Safety Measures Scheme, and this scheme also funded the provision of new road markings at Moneygold School. Works on the N16 at Drumkinsella were also carried out under the Accident/Remedial Safety Measures Scheme, and new road markings were laid under this scheme at Doonally.

A surfacing and road widening programme has been completed on regional Road R286 Calry, and sections of the N15 have been strengthened at Rathcormac and Cliffoney.  Reconstruction works were recently carried out to Derry Bridge near Grange.
