Contract Signing Major Boost for Enniscrone

The signing of the contract for the second phase of the Waterpoint facility in Enniscrone on March 28th, represents a major boost for Enniscrone. Waterpoint has been a success story since opening in 1998 and has been a major catalyst for the regeneration of Enniscrone. The directors of the management company of Waterpoint have recognised that significant market changes have taken place over the eight years since the centre opened for business, and have identified that the centre now needs to be enhanced and upgraded if it is to continue to attract business, and develop new markets.

Waterpoint currently has the following facilities

  • A 16.5m conventional pool
  • Childrens fun pool
  • Water slide
  • Adult Health Suite - Sauna/Steam Room/ Jacuzzi
  • Gym incorporating activity hall
  • Village Changing
  • Café area
  • Ancillary Accommodation
  • Car and bus parking facilities
  • Potential for 600 members
  • Pool areas that can accommodate 100 customers at a time

The main objectives of providing new facilities at Waterpoint are:

  • To ensure the facility’s continued success and operational viability.
  • To increase tourist (domestic and overseas) and local visits.
  • To help extend the tourist season in the Enniscrone area.
  • To lengthen the stay of tourists in the Enniscrone area.
  • To provide facilities to attract markets other than the family market.

Speaking at the contract signing, Mr Jim O’Regan, Chairman of Enniscrone Leisure Limited, extended a warm welcome to those present. He commended the work of the Community Council, the Town Improvements Committee, the Tidy Towns Committee and the local community at large for their help and co- operation. ‘We have identified developments in the leisure market, and the next phase of work will see the delivery of a suite of new facilities to further enhance Waterpoint’s reputation as a model of excellence in this arena’. He expressed his gratitude to Sligo County Council who have supported and encouraged this project from the outset. “Without the support of the full council, it would have been a difficult task.”

The centre has been closed since last November when Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O’Donoghue turned the sod on the new project. Declan Breen, Executive Director of Waterpoint explained that the decision to close the facility was made because of economic and practical reasons. “It was felt it was better to close the centre for the short period to better ensure the financial viability of it as an entity into the future.” In addition to the refurbishment of the existing aquacentre, the following are some of the new facilities planned for Waterpoint:
