‘Writer in Residence’ Programme a First for Sligo

In a first for Sligo Local Authorities, the Sligo Library Service has announced a ‘Writer in Residence’ programme for 2007-2008.

In keeping with the Library’s long established tradition of facilitating cultural initiatives in the city and county, the scheme will endeavour to augment the tremendous work taking place in Sligo, in activities such as creative writing and the promotion of literature as an art form.

At the heart of this residency is the Library’s main cultural objective to promote reading and in particular an appreciation of literature.

Programming will be finalised between Sligo Library Service and the Writer-in-Residence when he or she is appointed.  Among the main objectives of the programme:
  • To co-ordinate and extend the current Library based programme of creative writing through the Library network.
  • To champion the world of literature to members of Sligo Library Service.
  • To facilitate a series of workshops with Library staff in the area of literature appreciation.
  • To produce a high quality publication which will initially be published online on www.sligolibrary.ie.
The programme will shortly be advertised, and it is expected that the residency will commence in September 2007.

The Writer in Residence programme will take place over a total period of six months broken down into Phase One, September 2007 to December 2007 and Phase Two January 2008 to March 2008.

The writer-in-residence will be located at the offices of Sligo County Library.
