Work underway on Tubbercurry Local Area Plan
The County Council’s Development Planning Unit (DPU), assisted by the Area Planner and the Council’s Economic Development Officer, is currently working on the preparation of the Draft Tubbercurry Local Area Plan. Under the County Development Plan’s Settlement Strategy/Hierarchy, Tubbercurry is a designated Key Support Town - the only Key Support Town in County Sligo for which a local area plan has not yet been adopted.
In November and December 2005, the DPU consulted with the residents of Tubbercurry with a view to starting the preparation of a Draft Local Area Plan. A public meeting was held in Teach Laighne on 24 November 2005 and during the following month nineteen submissions were received from the public. During Summer 2006, the DPU prepared a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Screening Report, which was submitted to prescribed environmental authorities for comments and advice.
It was eventually determined that the implementation of the forthcoming local area plan is unlikely to have significant environmental effects.
Coolaney-Rockfield Mini-Plan
Sligo County Council decided on the 11th September 2006 to make Variation No. 2 of the County Development Plan - the Coolaney-Rockfield Mini-Plan.
The village of Coolaney and its neighbouring hamlet Rockfield are situated 14 miles to the south-west of Sligo City in a rural area under urban influence. In recent years, Coolaney has experienced significant development pressure.
Coolaney-Rockfield Mini-Plan aims to facilitate orderly development and seeks to create a cohesive settlement while maintaining the identities of both Rockfield and Coolaney. The plan makes provision for the creation of a secondary commercial core, a business/enterprise zone and a town park. Sensitive areas, such as the Owenbeg river corridor, are to be protected and enhanced.
Coolaney Housing Scheme
Sligo County Council’s new four house scheme in Coolaney is at roofing stage and is due to be completed in the next couple of months.

The plant became operational in October 2006 and will facilitate future development within Coolaney and provide environmental enhancement to the receiving waters in the Owenbeg River. The complete project will cost approximately €1.6m.
