Hazelwood-Ballinode Local Area Plan 2004-2010
Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council jointly adopted a Local Area Plan (LAP) for Hazelwood-Ballinode on the 1st November 2004. The plan covers an area lying immediately North of the Garavogue River between Sligo City to the West and Lough Gill to the East. The LAP encompasses the townlands of Ballinode and Hazelwood Demesne, including some areas of Rathquarter and Farranacardy. It straddles the administrative areas of both Sligo County Council and Sligo Borough Council and is subject to the requirements contained within the Sligo and Environs Development Plan (2004-2010). The primary aim of this plan is to provide a detailed framework, for the future development of this extensive area having regard to topography, environmental character, landownership patterns, archaeology, existing development patterns, future land uses, access and circulation, open space needs, the need for neighbourhood centres and social infrastructural considerations. The vision of this plan is to create a model, high-quality urban extension to Sligo Town, with a variety of uses and services set in a high quality landscape setting. In this manner, the area can be developed into a new quarter or district, focused on two new neighbourhood centres with land in their immediate vicinity developed as an ‘urban village’.
