€4m Contract for Enniscrone Waste Water Treatment Plant
Sligo County Council has awarded the contract to Electrical and Pump Services Ltd. to design, construct, operate and maintain (DBO) a new Wastewater Treatment Plant at Enniscrone. The plant has an ultimate design capacity of 5000 population equivalent, to fully comply with National and EU legislation. The cost of the design and build phase of the project will be €4m.
The new plant will provide wastewater treatment to serve existing and future domestic and non-domestic wastewater producers in the environs of Enniscrone. The works will cater for loading which is over and above the current capacity of the works and its provision will facilitate future development within Enniscrone. It will also provide environmental enhancement to the receiving waters at Killala Bay.
The majority of commercial development in Enniscrone is located on its three main streets and is combined with permanent residential type development. Clusters of holiday home type developments and a caravan park are located on the outskirts of the town. Following the 1995 Finance Act, development in Enniscrone benefited from the Tax Relief Seaside Resort Scheme, which prompted substantial growth in the development of tourism accommodation in the form of self-catering holiday homes and apartments.
An analysis of the treatment efficiency concluded that the works was not producing a 25/35 effluent standard during the summer period due to overloading and it was decided that improvement works were required.
In order to achieve economies of scale and thus provide value for money in the 20 year operational element of the contract, it has been decided to bundle six other plants with the proposed facility at Enniscrone into one Operation & Maintenance contract. These six plants are; Ballysadare; Coolaney; Dromore West; Easkey; Aclare and Cloonacool.
