Major Amenity Schemes Being Delivered by Sligo Borough Council

Sligo Borough Council is currently undertaking an exciting range of major capital projects to develop and improve recreational and amenity facilities in Sligo and Environs. The following projects are under construction:-

Seaview Drive Promenade

The aim of this project is to take full advantageof the coastal setting and the views over Cartron Bay with spectacular views of Benbulben to the north-east.  The creation of this new section of promenade is part of an overall programme of Environmental Improvement schemes currently being developed by Sligo Borough Council.

The improvement works include the installation of stone filled gabions to provide additional riverside protection and to create a level promenade; new paving works and railings; new lighting and seating and feature stone paved viewing area.

A stone engraved artwork centerpiece depicts a seagull with a backdrop of Benbulben in the distance.

The project involves extensive earthworks and fill material to create the desired levels, and the design respects and does not encroach onto the adjacent Cartron Marshes, which are listed as a Special Area of Conservation.

The project has been designed to allow access for all users to the promenade and to the viewing area.

Work on site is progressing well and the scheme is now at 90 completion stage with lighting, landscaping and final paving works to be completed over the next two months.

Doorly Park Environmental Improvement Scheme

The aim of this project is to rejuvenate an underutilised Green-field site at Doorly Park, adjacent to a residential area, to create a recreational park and amenity area, on the fringe of Sligo Town Centre.

The creation of this recreational facility is part of an ongoing series of Environmental improvement and recreational projects currently being implemented in Sligo, by Sligo Borough Council.

The improvement works include the provision of a new grass pitch; an all-weather multi-sports play area; a parking area; cycle and walking paths; amenity lighting; and new tree planting.

The entrance of the site will be marked with a site-specific entrance feature combining local stone work with ornamental metalwork.

Doorly Park has been designed to allow access for all and will provide a much needed play and recreation space for people of all ages.

The design of the park also allows for flexibility of organised team sports or individual passive recreation.

Site works commenced in late 2006 and the scheme is now nearing 30% completion stage. A large proportion of the overall works will be completed over the next six to nine month period and it is hoped the development will be a great addition to the recreational amenity of the area.

Upgrading of over 2 km of woodland path along the river edge was completed in January and the development of over 2km of new woodland walkway from Boat House Quay was finalised in March 2007. Sligo Borough Council acknowledges the input and assistance of Mr. Paul Canning from Sligo County Council who liaised with the Parks Department and oversaw the project to fruition.

The Old Swimming Pool site

The aim of the project is to regenerate the derelict site of the Old Public Swimming Baths beside Markievicz Road, to create a new public waterside amenity space.  The creation of this Public Space is part of an overall programme of Environmental Improvement schemes currently being developed by Sligo Borough Council.

This site is important in a local historical context.  As an open air Public Baths, it provided a learning resource and meeting place for generations of Sligo townsfolk. The advent of new public health legislation ultimately led to its closure many years ago.

The outline and shape of the Old Swimming Pool site has been retained through the use of raised seating, walling, and the area regraded to create this new amenity space.

The improvement works include new paved promenade walkways; railings and feature lighting and a central lawn for performances and public events.

The site also has feature engraved stone seating; new steps and ornamental metalwork and pillars.  It is envisaged that additional planting and artworks will be added to the project over a period of time.

This revitalised amenity area will allow the public to enjoy these waterside views of Sligo Harbour, whilst opening the site up for a wide range of public activities, and removing an unsightly landmark on approaching Sligo from Donegal.

The project has been designed to allow access for all users to this amenity space and viewing area.

Phase 1 of the project is nearing 60% completion stage and it is envisaged that final landscaping and paving will be completed over the next four month period.

Tree Care Programme

The Parks Department has been involved over the winter in an extensive programme of tree care works throughout Sligo Borough. The tree care programme  included light pruning and re-staking of small street trees and heavy pruning of larger trees. In a few cases the removal of trees was warranted where the trees had become dangerous or unsuitable for their planting location.

A number of other major projects including Phase II and Phase III development of Forthill Park and the development of Cleveragh Regional Park are awaiting confirmation of funding from central government.  Works on other environmental improvement works such as the recreational development of Seaview Park are nearing completion and it is expected that the new park will be open to the public in early summer 2007. A diverse range of landscape enhancement works will be ongoing during 2007 such as upgrading of high profile sites by introduction of planter boxes with trees. The Parks Department with the assistance of the public are striving to continuously enhance and improve the overall appearance and attractiveness of Sligo for its citizens and visitors.
