In 2007 the Arts Department of Sligo County Council will celebrate its 10th Birthday with a special programme of arts events, performances, new commissions, publications and exhibitions. The establishment of the Arts Office by Sligo County Council in 1997 was significant for the development of the arts within the county. Many notable achievements on the journey from 1997 to 2007 will be highlighted and celebrated in music, the visual arts, literature, public art, youth arts, arts in education and arts in health, which have created new opportunities for artists and arts professionals, and resulted in much greater access to the arts for the general public. For 2007 the Vogler Spring Festival has commissioned composer Elaine Agnew to write a work for children’s choir and string quartet to be performed by a choir from Ardkeerin NS, Riverstown with the Vogler Quartet on Saturday 5th May. Sligo Arts Department is collaborating with Ocean FM to produce a unique series of radio programmes curated by writer Brian Leyden. Every third Sunday of the month from November 2006 to June 2007 Sorcha Crowley, presenter of ‘The Arts House’, will be meeting Writers’ Groups throughout County Sligo.

The Birthday Celebratory Programme will culminate in the launch of the new County Sligo Arts Plan 2007-2012 in September 2007 which will map the way forward for Sligo Arts Department and its services, working in partnership with departments in Sligo Local Authorities and local and national partners, in particular The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
