While the opening of the new Inner Relief Road comes a few years later than anticipated, it is a major step forward for Sligo. as well as the immediate and tangible benefits in terms of improved journey times, the new road will provide the impetus for the continued growth and development of Sligo and its environs.
We no longer have the comfort of thinking parochially following the designation of Gateway Status for Sligo. In developing our transport infrastructure, we have to plan on a regional context, as we are not just servicing the needs of Sligo borough and its environs, but the north west region as a whole.
Sligo is a confident, progressive and vibrant city, and I think this is apparent to any visitor. We are ideally placed to attract sustainable inward investment, and the unprecedented commercial development will deliver quality and diversity to our city. The opening of the road will also facilitate the development of large tracts of land in the western part of the borough.
Therefore, the completion of this project is not just about alleviating traffic congestion. The imminent pedestrianisation of our core streets will ensure Sligo is a pleasant and enjoyable city to visit. The message is very forcefully delivered that Sligo is a dynamic, thriving city, and is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourists and investors.
