Great 'Greening' in Sligo Schools

Nearly 70% of Sligo Schools are saving money and raising awareness about the environment through the Green Schools programme. This is one of the highest participation levels across Ireland! We are delighted that 10 more schools gained their green flags this year:

  • Colaiste Iascaigh, Easkey
  • Culfadda National School, Ballymote
  • Ransboro National School
  • Scoil Asicus Naofa, Strandhill
  • Scoil Chriost Ri, Enniscrone
  • Sooey National School
  • St Brendan’s National School, Cartron
  • St Cecelia’s, Cregg House, Sligo
  • St John’s National School, Sligo
  • St Patrick’s National School, Calry

Special mention also to St Aidan’s National School, Monasteraden who successfully completed their third green flag assessment - this time on water. There are many benefits to taking part and registration to the green school programme is free:

Sligo County Council provides registered schools with a:

  • • free battery recycling service,
  • • free composting kit (compost bin, kitchen caddy and information booklet).

On receipt of your Green Flag, Sligo schools receive a €500 bonus from Sligo County Council.

There are major cost savings to schools through the reduction of fuel bills and less waste produced for landfill

As a project that involves the whole school community (parents, pupils, teachers, board of management) it further enhances a school’s self esteem and brings a real sense of achievement.
