Work starts on Sligo Riverside Cycle PathThe first sod has been cut on the upgrading and extension of the Sligo Riverside path to make it suitable for both cyclist and walkers as part of the North West Cycle Trail. The North West Cycle Trail is being funded with a grant of over £400,000 from Measure 1.4 of the EU INTERREG IIIA Programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland. The 193-mile circular route will link to the existing National Cycle Network route from Lifford to Enniskillen and adds a new, signed route from Blacklion through to Sligo and Donegal back to Lifford. The first phase of the project will include branding, signing and marketing of the route. It is anticipated that other traffic-free sections will also be developed within the next few years. The project will link with the existing Kingfisher Trail and create a route that also links to the Innishowen cycle route presently being developed. The route travels through a variety of scenic landscapes from coastal to lakeland and remote upland to rural towns. The encouragement of walking and cycling tourism will have less impact on the environment than car-borne visitors and will utilise the network of pathways while bringing in considerable economic benefits by increased visitor ‘spend’. The North West Trail Steering Group comprises the six councils the route traverses; Donegal County Council, Strabane District Council, Omagh District Council, Fermanagh District Council, Leitrim County Council and Sligo County Council as well as representation from International Fund for Ireland, PSNI and Garda Road Safety, North West Tourism, Failte Ireland, and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
