Message from Cathaoirleach Patsy Barry

The completion of the Inner Relief Road is a major achievement by the Sligo Local Authorities, and the evident quality of all aspects of the project is a credit to all concerned.

The various agencies involved are to be commended for the dynamic way they managed this project – the Department of Transport, the Department of the Environment the Sligo Local Authorities, the National Roads Authority, and of course, the Sligo Local Authorities. I want to thank in particular Minister Martin Cullen and his predecessors in this post for their valuable support and encouragement at each stage of this process.

The changing demographics of Sligo exert greater demands on our road network, not only in Sligo city but in the towns and villages throughout the county. The delivery of the Inner Relief Road provide the impetus to progress the other elements of our roads programme.

I see the opening of the Relief Road as a catalyst for a series of other developments, particularly in the context of our ‘gateway’ status. Many prospective investors will welcome today’s opening as evidence that Sligo is developing an excellent road infrastructure, one that will meet the increasing demands of commercial and private traffic in the years ahead.
