Major Roadworks carried out under PEACE II Programme

A number of important roadworks have been carried out recently under the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation

The various schemes were carried out following grant assistance of E405,000 awarded to Sligo County Council by ICBAN, (Irish Central Border Area Network). ICBAN was established in 1985 and is made up of ten Local Authorities, five in the North and ten in the South.

Among the works carried out in Sligo were:

R 290 BALLYGAWLEY-COLLOONEY ROAD

Works were carried out at three locations on this road, at Ballygrania, Rathrippon and Kilross. The road was re-aligned and surfaced, and dangerous bends were removed.

R 284 DOONALLY

Road was surfaced and alignment was improved.

R 287 DOOMORE/CROSSBOY

Works carried out included surfacing and realignment

N16 SLIGO-ENNISKILLEN ROAD

The scenic viewing area at Gortnagrelly overlooking Glencar Lake was enhanced.

Senior Engineer Tommy Carroll welcomed ‘the generous funding allocated to Sligo under the Peace and Reconciliation Programme. It enabled Sligo County Council to carry out important roadworks which could not have been funded in the short term under the normal funding programmes.’
