The Cranmore Regeneration Programme was given a boost recently with the visit of Minister Noel Ahern TD to the Abbeyquarter Community Centre where he was met by members of the Cranmore Regeneration Steering Committee, members of the Community, Borough Council officials and elected members to hear details of the programme. The Minister was taken on a guided tour of the Cranmore estate by the County Manager, Hubert Kearns and Mayor Councillor Declan Bree. Dorothy Clarke, Director of Community Enterprise and the Arts Department of Sligo County Council gave a presentation to the Minister on the work done to date and the framework for moving the programme forward.

In her presentation, Ms Clarke spoke of the need for taking a long-term strategic approach to the development of the programme and the importance of interagency co-operation at all levels in order to progress the plan. However community participation and local ownership are critical to the success of the programme.

The Minister heard details of the composition of the Steering Committee which is chaired by the County Manager, and includes representation from the NWHB, Gardai, Dept of Social and Family Affairs, Dept of Education and Science, Sligo Leader Partnership, Sligo Social Services, International Fund for Ireland, Cluid Housing Association, FAS, Elected Members of Council, Town Clerk and members of the Cranmore Community. The Cranmore Regeneration Committee is an innovative partnership structure representing local Government, Local Development, State Agencies, Social Partners and Elected representatives coming together to develop a strategic Regeneration Plan for Cranmore Estate. The Cranmore Regeneration Programme has been prioritised by the Local Authority and significant efforts are being made to ensure the programme succeeds.

The Steering Committee has been set up to oversee the planning and implementation of the Cranmore Regeneration Plan. Ms Clarke welcomed the appointment of Jennifer Murphy as of the programme. She also acknowledged the support of Tom Hobson, Development Consultant of the International Fund for Ireland in supporting the Planning stage of the programme.

The Minister spoke of lessons to be learned from other Regeneration Programmes and advised the Cranmore Steering Committee to look at models of best practice to inform their plan. However he cautioned that all Regeneration Programmes are different and no one model fits all. The Cranmore Regeneration Programme is unique in that aims to address both the physical regeneration and the social regeneration of the Cranmore estate. The vision guiding the programme is Improved Social, Economic and Environmental living space for the Community of Cranmore.
