Burial Grounds

In 2004/2005 a review was undertaken by the Office of Community & Enterprise which examined the Council’s current role in the provision and maintenance of burial grounds in County Sligo.

It was evident from this process that a more structured approach was needed in the form of a policy which would form the basis for any future burial ground work programmes. During 2005, this policy was devised and focused on a number of key issues:
  • Condition of all Council controlled burial grounds
  • Current level of plot space available
  • State of buildings/structures in burial grounds
The policy identified the following 10 burial grounds which require urgent action:
  1. Ahamlish (Grange)
  2. Keelogues (Ballintrillick)
  3. Knockbrack (Culfadda)
  4. Carrigans (Maugherow)
  5. Killery (Ballintogher)
  6. Court Abbey (Achonry)
  7. Kilmacowen (Dromard)
  8. Mount Irwin (Easkey)
The Policy also makes recommendations regarding the future role for the Council and the community in the provision of burial grounds. The Burial Ground Policy 2006- 2010 will be presented to the Council in early 2006 for adoption and it is hoped to commence a programme of works in these locations on a phased basis throughout the life of the policy document.
