Experiment with Play 2012

Children and adults were in Doorly Park on Sunday 1st July to celebrate National Play Day. A variety of activities from gardening, science experiments, tag rugby, messy play, arts and crafts, soccer, a library corner and golf were available for children up to 12 years.

The theme of this year’s Play Day was ‘Experiment with Play’ and there was a science theme to many of the activities.

Colourful windmills generated lots of wind energy.

This annual event is sponsored by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and organized locally by Sligo County Council, Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership and Sligo County Childcare Committee.

Flowers, vegetables and herbs donated by Connaught Gold, the Waterglades and Horkan’s Garden Centre were potted up and taken home. Refreshments on the day were provided by O’Kelly’s Londis.

Children got a chance to look at and hold rabbits and chickens and even take a sheep for a walk.

A replica Traveller wagon created great interest with fine stencil work on the woodwork and hand-crafted leaded glass. Sligo Traveller Support Group staff were on hand to talk about the wagon.
