Pride of Place 2010

Sligo County Council would like to acknowledge and congratulate the three groups who represented County Sligo in the Co-operation Ireland All-Island Pride of Place Competition 2010.  The groups are to be commended for all the hard work in preparing for the competition and presenting their projects on judging day.  The three groups are:

Group  Category
Western Drama Festival & Phoenix Players Community Arts Initiative
Ballinafad Development Association Population up to 200
Ballintrillick Environmental Group Community Response to unemployment

The first port of call for judges from Co-operation Ireland was the Western Drama Festival and Phoenix Players on 27 July 2010 in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry.  A presentation was given by the groups outlining their long history and involvement in drama, their achievements to date and their future plans.  This was followed by a 1 Act play which was enjoyed by all present.   The groups had also displayed various memorabilia and awards received from past and present productions.  As part of the judging process the judges also mingled with group members and viewed the various displays in order to obtain a greater understanding of the groups and their achievements.

The judges then travelled to Ballinafad where they received a very warm welcome.  Following a presentation by the group the judges were shown around the beautiful village of Ballinafad and commented on the lovely arrangement of flowers and hanging baskets interspersed throughout the village.  It was very evident from their presentation that there is a great community spirit in Ballinafad coupled with a vision and plans for the future.  Again it was obvious that the community had put a lot of energy and commitment into preparing for the Pride of Place Competition.

On 28 July 2010, the judges travelled to The Benwiskin Centre to visit the Ballintrillick Environmental Group.  This group who are celebrating their 10th Anniversary this year gave a presentation highlighting their achievements over the last 10 years which have included the provision of employment opportunities within the locality.  As part of the visit the group brought the judges to the site of the old Gleniff Bartyes Mills and along the scenic Gleniff Horseshoe drive.  It was very evident that this group had worked tirelessly on preparing for this day.
