Joint Policing Committees were established to provide a forum for Local Authority elected members, Oireachtas members, An Garda Síochána and community representatives to consider and make recommendations on matters affecting the policing of the Local Authority area.
Sligo County Council’s Joint Policing Committee is chaired by Councillor Jude Devins, Councillor Margaret Gormley is the Vice Chair and includes Oireachtas and Community representatives and the Gardai.
In recent months Sligo County Council’s Joint Policing Committee (JPC) identified a number of priority areas of concern, and at its most recent meeting on 4th September 2009 in Teach Laighne, Tubbercurry, Chairs and Vice-Chairs were appointed to three to three sub-committees:
| Sub-committee | Chair | Vice-Chair |
|---|---|---|
| Road Safety | Councillor Pat McGrath | Councillor Mary Barrett |
| Rural Isolation | Councillor Michael Fleming | Councillor Margaret Gormley |
| Drug/Alcohol Abuse | Councillor Sean MacManus | Councillor Martin Baker |
The sub committees will each draw up a work-plan which will form an integral part of the overall work plan for the Joint Policy Committee.
The meeting discussed the issue of anti-social behaviour, the importance of proper security for business premises, and the allocation of Garda resources in Sligo’s towns and villages.
Marion Quigley, Co-ordinator of the ‘Leitrim Calling Project’ presented a report on the free, confidential telephone call service available to the elderly and vulnerable in County Leitrim, and Sligo County Council’s Road Safety Officer Val Baynes outlined the importance of taking extra care on the roads coming into the Autumn and Winter period.
