Junior Achievement Presentation

Friends from Junior Achievement,
Director of Services Rita McNulty and Staff
Special Guests,

It is great pleasure to join you here today for the presentation of the Junior Achievement awards. I think this is an excellent programme, run by a team of very dedicated volunteers. The programme offers a wide rang of enterprise and science projects, and is delivered in a way that maintains the interest of the students involved. Many of the students are at a key point in their lives where they are considering possible career choices, and Junior Achievement opens up new horizons to guide them in this process. As well as learning about the science and enterprise subjects, the programme is also very important in terms of personal development. There is a welcome focus on inter-action and team-work throughout the programme, and this helps build self-confidence and develop social skills. I am delighted that the Sligo Local Authorities are committed to the Junior Achievement Programme, and 12 staff have taken an active role in the current phase. I admire and applaud their commitment, they give their time as volunteers, their only reward being the success of the programme. When we talk about the role of the Local Authority in the community, this is the sort of project we should try and encourage, as it has very real benefits for the students taking part. For the older students in the programme, I think the key message is.. to stay committed to your education, fully develop your skills, and carefully consider career choices. The Junior Achievement Programme provides a great foundation for the future, and the skills you acquire will serve you very well in the years ahead. To the students here today, can I thank you for taking part in the programme, you are a credit to your family and your schools, and you can be very proud of your achievement. A special word of thanks to the volunteers and the teachers supporting them. You embraced the Junior Achievement model with great enthusiasm, and you can be assured that your contribution is greatly appreciated by our many young ‘achievers’ here today.

Finally, thank you for coming to County Hall today to allow us join in this celebration, and well done to each and every one of you.

Thank you.
