The National Primary route N15 road is one of the main communication links in the North-West of Ireland, forming a section of the National Primary network, and extending from Sligo City to Lifford in Co. Donegal. The Sligo section is a single carriageway 26.4km in length. The existing N15 consists of generally sub-standard single carriageway road and passes through the villages of Rathcormac, Drumcliff, Grange and Cliffoney, which brings high volumes of traffic through these villages.
The N15 forms part of the Atlantic Route Corridor, which was highlighted for improvements in Transport 21, which sets out the Government’s plan for the development of Ireland’s Transport Policy for the next ten years.
Following provision of funding from the NRA work commenced on route selection in 2004 and a Preferred Route for the N4/N15 Realignment – Sligo to County Boundary was adopted by Sligo County Council and Sligo Borough Council in 2006. The route extends from Hughes Bridge in Sligo City to the boundary with Co. Leitrim, a length of 26km.
A contract has been signed with Ryan Hanley WSP Ltd. for provision of Engineering Consultancy Services. The Contract includes for the preparation of Preliminary Report, Environmental Impact Statement and CPO documentation and will include proposals for widening of Hughes Bridge. It also includes preparation of a Traffic Study for Sligo City which will inform other proposals for roads in the Sligo and Environs area. It will be a three year contract, and it is proposed that the Preliminary Design, EIS and CPO documentation will be completed after two years and statutory procedures will be completed by the end of three years. This means that the CPO process is due to be completed by the end of 2010.
