Councillor Patsy Barry has been re-elected Chairman of the Sligo-Drumcliffe Electoral Area. At a meeting on 25th January 2010, Councillor Barry was unanimously elected on the proposal of Councillor Joe Leonard, seconded by Councillor Matt Lyons.
Councillor Barry started the committee’s first meeting of the new year by welcoming newly elected members Councillor Hubert Keaney and Councillor Matt Lyons, and thanked outgoing Members Councillors Ita Fox and Seamus Kilgannon for their work over the years.
Councillor Barry stated that the committee would have a strong focus on roads projects in the Sligo-Drumcliffe area, and confirmed that he proposed to convene a meeting of the committee when the Draft Roadworks Programme was available.
Councillor Hubert Keaney was unanimously elected by the meeting to represent Sligo County Council on the A4/N16 Cross-Border Committee. The Council’s second representative on the committee is Councillor Tony McLoughlin, who was nominated at a recent meeting of the Sligo-Strandhill Electoral Area.
The A4/N16 Committee is made up of representatives from Sligo County Council, Leitrim County Council, Cavan County Council and Fermanagh District Council.
The committee was formed in 2008 to advance the upgrading of the A4/N16 route.
Councillor Veronica Cawley commended the Roads Staff for their prompt actions both in treating the roads in the severe weather spell and also in carrying out repairs to the worst affected roads in the county’s network.
Councillor Hubert Keaney asked for a progress report on the provision of traffic calming measures at Rathcormack, and was advised that and it was proposed to extend the public lighting on the North side of the village as part of the work programme and to complete road markings when weather is suitable.
In response to a query from Councillor Joe Leonard, Senior Executive Engineer Paddy Hughes provided details of the new pedestrian crossing close to the cross-roads in Cliffoney village and the restrictions to cars parking along the roadside beside the crossing by the erection of bollards.
